NASP, a group of eleven periodontal practices, many of whom have been together for more than twenty years, is a professional organization whose focus is primarily non-clinical. The Core Group represents some of the most successful and highly productive periodontal practices in the US.  The doctors, if not always “visible” in the conventional “lecture circuit” sense, as defined by the American Academy of Periodontics, are none the less extraordinary models of excellence. This formidable group of clinicians comes together to explore how to distinguish their practices in the areas of marketing, management, practice development, growth of referrals, and staff issues.

Once a year at their Annual Meeting, the “membership” is opened, by invitation only, to approximately thirty additional practices. These Periodontists, most of whom have become perennial participants, share the belief that real success in practice is only partly about who has the best clinical training and technical expertise.

The group is diverse, with members having less than ten years of practice experience to several with retirement on their radar screen. The varied perspectives of this wide continuum of successful practitioners are what make this group unique. Additionally, key office staff members in managerial positions are also invited to participate.

The Annual NASP Meeting is a two day event which many doctors choose to attend with key team members. The first day consists of a nationally recognized speaker presenting material on the subject of practice management. Day two consists of The Doctor Mastermind Session, considered by most of the attendees to be more valuable than the formal podium presentation.

Prior to the meeting, in preparation for the Saturday Doctor Mastermind, a series of questions is posed to the participants. Each individual is required to come to NASP with short answers to each question. Sample questions range from “What has been your most effective marketing strategy?” to “How do you deal with employee issues and manage overhead?” These answers must be printed and are distributed to each doctor in attendance.

In addition to the foregoing, there is often a question, such as, “Provide us with one great clinical ‘pearl.’” Each doctor is further asked to bring a sample of his or her most effective office form. Each participant has approximately five to ten minutes to present answers and explain the most effective use of their forms. Active discussion and participation occurs with everyone freely sharing information. Each participant returns home with a large body of information, often containing a year’s worth of great ideas which can be selectively be tailored and implemented into one’s practice.

The Saturday Team Mastermind follows the same format as the Doctors’ session with its own questions. Doctors are encouraged to bring key team members to the NASP Annual Invitational Meeting. Those who attend return to their offices with a wealth of ideas to implement. Their presence at the meeting makes it easier for the doctors to share what they have learned with team members when they return to their offices. Regardless of whether a doctor attends with a team member, each doctor is required to bring answers to the questions posed for both the Doctor and Team Master Mind Saturday session!

Succeeding in Periodontics in The Current Climate of “I can do it all “Super GP’s” and “Carpetbaggers.”

Without question, the North American Society of Periodontists Annual Invitational Meeting is a meeting like no other. This is not a meeting after which our doctors go back to their offices and what they have learned fades over time.  The impact of attending NASP will be felt by all our attendees long after they have returned to their practices.
