Dr. Joel Sanders, D.D.S.

Over the past 20 years of my dental practice, my interest in holistic dentistry has grown and made an impact on thousands of patients of all ages.

After completing a traditional dental education at Northwestern University in Chicago, I had a desire to learn more about healthcare topics, nutritional supplements, and how to help patients feel their best.

At that point, words like “holistic” and “biocompatible” were not common.  From my undergraduate years at the University of Illinois, I had been interested in using natural foods and supplements to stay healthy.  In dentistry, it made sense for me to follow a holistic approach for my practice.

Proper amalgam removal :

Protocol for Amalgam Removal

For your safety, amalgams must be removed properly. Specific guidelines must be taken to prevent mercury and other metals from being released into your body.

This video, courtesy of the IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology), demonstrates why it’s crucial to use our protocol in proper amalgam removal.

Taking Precautions To Prevent Absorption Of Mercury Vapors…

Vapors may enter through eyes, nose or mouth. This occurs most often
through the oral mucosa of cheeks, gum, tongue and palate.

To keep patients at optimal health, we recommend these five important steps:

  1. Use of a rubber dam.
  2. Use of a low-speed drill.
  3. Use of two different vacuum systems.
  4. X-ray taken after amalgam removal.
  5. Use of chlorella.

Q Do Holistic Dentists Use Fluoride?

Most holistic dentists do not recommend fluoride or toothpaste combining fluoride. While fluoride does have some anti-cavity properties, the effect on general health is significant. Recent evidence/research points to fluoride as a neuro-toxin.

It also is implicated and can contribute to hypo-thyroid and hashimoto’s disease.

Most interesting is the recent finding that is may also cause calcification of the pineal gland. This gland produces melatonin, the sleep hormone and over one hundred other powerful anti-oxidants that help prevent cancer.

It only takes trace amounts of fluoride to produce these negative effects.

Just because fluoridated toothpaste is used does not mean these conditions will occur. However, fluoride may contribute to them. Fluoride is also present in the water and many anti-depressant drugs.

Q Is a Holistic Dentist Right for You?

I’m often asked, “Is it safe to take out mercury? I heard it’s better to just leave it in.

If you take it out, I was told it’s better to remove just 1 or 2 at a time, and space it out over several weeks or months.”

There are many different philosophies regarding amalgam removal. But Dr. Doug Cook’s approach (Father of holistic dentistry) is if the proper protocol is used, and due precautions taken, it should not matter if just one is removed or multiple mercury fillings are removed. There is a very detailed protocol which I will not elaborate on here, but basically there are five important points:
Use slow speed drilling to protect the pulp of the tooth and produce minimal Hg vapor.
Isolate the tooth.
Use chlorella, a single cell algae as an adjunct chelator/natural supplement.
Verify every particle of mercury and metal is removed.
Refill the tooth with a proven no-metal, no toxicity filling.

What is the Difference Between Traditional Dentistry and Holistic Dentistry?
Consider the mouth-mind-body connection.

It is the realization that just like traditional Chinese and Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine, every part of the body is integrated, influenced and affected by every other part of the body.

Eating foods fried with saturated fats and containing artificial flavors and colors may lead to illness.

In the mouth, using known toxic materials such as mercury, nickel and BPA fillings that off-gas will also negatively impact the body.

Fluorine may also be considered toxic. And even though it has some beneficial anti-cavity effect, it is avoided by most holistic dentists. There is a body of research showing detrimental effects on the health of the nervous system, thyroid gland and pineal gland.

Holistic dentists choose dental materials that are natural with little or no unnatural side effects. They also recommend natural toothpaste products, without fluoride and other known toxins.
