Dr. Tom Pezdek graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pre-Dental. He went on to UNC School of Dentistry and graduated in 1982. He has been practicing in the greater Raleigh area for more than thirty years and has a new location in Apex NC, just outside of Raleigh, where he resides today. Dr. Pezdek feels that his biggest contribution to dentistry is his development and teaching of oral sedation dentistry techniques. These techniques have helped many hundreds of thousands of high-fear patients around the world to receive needed dental care they otherwise would not have been able to receive.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are false tooth roots that are used to support crowns, or “false” teeth. They are usually made out of titanium. Many people choose this type of procedure because they feel self-conscious about losing their teeth. However, improved appearance is not the only benefit of dental implant tooth restoration. Dental implants can improve function, clarity of speech and overall quality of life. It is also important to note that tooth loss often leads to secondary health problems, such as malnutrition. Therefore, this treatment can help improve not only a person’s oral health, but his or her overall health as well.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure performed by a professional dentist for a patient with an infection inside a tooth’s structure. This procedure is also often referred to as ‘endodontic therapy.’ Every tooth has root canals or small spaces that contain blood vessels and nerve endings. These hollows are part of the pulp chamber or interior of a tooth. Occasionally, microbes and bacteria infect the sensitive pulp, which can put the health of the tooth at risk of serious decay or complete loss.

A tooth with extensive decay, cracks or infection will require a pulpectomy to remove the dangerous infection. Dr. Pezdek has received specialized training in performing endodontic procedures and understands how to protect your tooth from further damage. Before our dentists near Apex NC begin this dental procedure, the patient’s oral health is analyzed with medical imaging and other diagnostic tools. Infection from can be inside or underneath the tooth, requiring different treatment plans. Part of the treatment plan will include making a natural looking crown restoration to place over the damaged tooth’s structure.

Tooth Colored Fillings

A nicer-looking appearance! Our dentist in Apex may recommend the tooth-colored type of filling its white, just like your natural tooth. It will be impossible for anyone to tell whether you have this type of filling. A nicer-looking appearance is one of the main reasons that people choose tooth-colored fillings over others.

Better for your health! Not only does the tooth-colored type have a nicer-looking appearance, but for patients who have a sensitivity to mercury and other metals, the white variety can be better for your health. Tooth colored fillings are free of mercury and other metals that can cause sensitivities and allergies.

They are long-lasting! Many people hesitate to get tooth-colored fillings because they are more expensive than the amalgam type. However our dentists in Apex, know that the white type lasts longer because it is less prone to cracking and breaking. This type also makes it harder for bacteria to enter the tooth. If bacteria enter the tooth, then it will begin to decay again. Tooth-colored fillings may actually end up saving money over time.

TMJ Joint Pain

TMJ stands for Tempo-Mandibular Joint. It is the joint next to the ear canal that articulates the lower jaw. Pain mainly comes from the muscles that support the joint and can radiate to all the chewing muscles.

This pain is caused by hours of UNCONSIOUS clenching of our teeth due to STRESS. The muscles deficient in calcium and magnesium start to spasm and cramp up. It is not uncommon with TMJ pain to have leg cramps or Charlie Horses. Both problems have the same cause. Quit often these symptoms can be relieved by taking Cal/Mag.

Sedation Dentistry

Oral sedation dentistry is the preferred treatment for patients who want anxiety-free and fear-free dentistry. However, it is important to talk to an oral surgeon near Cary NC with the help of Dr. Tom Pezdek. This will help him decide the best course of treatment, as every patient is unique.

Oral sedation is very easy to use. All you have to do is take a small pill. The medication helps you relax in the dental chair, but you will still be able to communicate with Dr. Pezdek and his team, so you will always maintain a level of control over your treatment.

Oral sedation is cost effective. Because sedation allows Dr. Pezdek and his team to work quickly and complete several procedures at once, you save money in the long run because you don’t have to come back for multiple visits. It is also less costly to administer sedation orally rather than intravenously.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Porcelain Dental Crowns

Enamel is the natural outer layer of our teeth. Very simply, a crown is a perfect man made enamel layer replacing the broken down or discolored outer layer of enamel. The crown is placed over a tooth that has been broken or cracked, or has been damaged by decay. Not only can a dental crown save the remaining health of a tooth, but it can also greatly improve appearance and smile.

There are a variety of reasons why crowns may be required. A patient will need one if they have cracks in the teeth, have a tooth that has been broken badly and severely worn down, or they have a dental implant. Dental crowns can also support teeth that have large fillings but not much enamel left, can cover teeth that are badly discolored or misshapen, or can hold a bridge in place. Dental crowns may also be required for some cosmetic purposes.

A child may even get this procedure done for health reasons. Dental crown restoration can help prevent cavities as it can cover baby teeth or preserve teeth that cannot support fillings.

Dental Bonding

If you have a chipped, cracked, discolored, or decayed tooth, cosmetic dental bonding may be a great treatment option to repair and restore your radiant smile. Cosmetic dental bonding is affordable, quick, and painless. There is usually very little removal of existing tooth structure needed for this treatment, and anesthesia is not required in most cases. At Pezdek Dental Care, our cosmetic dentist in Cary NC and his team use composite resin material for the bonding because it can be best matched to the color of your teeth, achieving a natural look while restoring your smile.

To bond the composite to your natural tooth, a gel is applied before applying the material. This gel helps the composite resin adhere to the tooth. Next, we apply, mold and smooth the putty-like resin. A very bright light is aimed at the composite to harden the material in just seconds, creating a durable bonded restoration. Then we trim, shape, and polish the material so that it matches the shape and color of the tooth, creating a natural smile.

There are a number of benefits to cosmetic dental bonding – it’s affordable, minimally invasive, and painless. In most cases only a small portion of the tooth enamel has to be removed. Additionally, many people choose this procedure because the results are usually achieved in just a single visit. And the resin composite can last ten years, sometime even longer.
