Ceramic Implants: Biocompatible Option for Aesthetic Dental Restoration

Interview with Dr. Lina Karnesi

Ceramic implants have emerged as a strong and biocompatible option for teeth replacement. They are now well-established in the field, and numerous dentists are incorporating both materials, with a growing preference for ceramic-based implants over time. Dr. Lina Karnesi, a specialist in oral surgery, has been running her own dental practice in Radolfzell am Bodensee since 2019, specializing in treatments in the field of metal-free implantology. She provides insight into why she specifically chose these implants in the following interview.

Dr. Karnesi, since 2019, you have been offering specialized treatments in the field of metal-free implantology. What can patients expect from your treatment concept?

In 2017, I completed my first training on ceramic implants after successfully using titanium implants for several years. Right after that, I began providing ceramic implants. Initially, I was quite skeptical since some colleagues were not convinced by this concept. However, I have now realized that ceramic implants are on par with titanium implants, and in fact, they are less susceptible to inflammation and tissue degradation in the long term.

Since when have you been using ceramic implants?

In 2017, I completed my first training on ceramic implants after successfully using titanium implants for several years. Right after that, I began providing ceramic implants. Initially, I was very skeptical, as some colleagues were not convinced by this concept. However, I have now realized that ceramic implants are not inferior to titanium implants; on the contrary, they are less susceptible to inflammation and tissue degradation in the long term.

In what situations do you prefer to use ceramic implants?

For us, ceramic implants are the highest quality and biocompatible option for replacing teeth in an aesthetically pleasing manner. We offer patients ceramic implants who seek sustainable and biological treatment, provided there are no medical concerns against it.

Do you also perform immediate implantations?

In recent years, there has been an increased demand for efficient treatments that rapidly restore both aesthetics and function. Thanks to modern methods, implants can now be reliably placed immediately after a tooth extraction. Under specific conditions, we offer this treatment more frequently in our practice.

"We find that the restorations remain very stable over time. The level of the gum remains stable, and we haven't observed any intolerances or peri-implantitis so far. " - Dr. Lina Karnesi

What is your main focus when it comes to patients seeking implant restorations?

We ensure that all necessary preliminary treatments are completed. This includes removing inflamed teeth, treating cavities, as well as thorough cleaning and gum treatment. Healthy gums, healthy bone, and intact neighboring teeth are crucial for the success of implant restoration.

There is clinical evidence pointing to improved biocompatibility of ceramic implants with soft tissue and bone. What are your experiences?

It's impressive to witness how rapidly gum tissue can grow around ceramic implants. This often eliminates the need for complicated grafting procedures, and the outcomes appear aesthetically pleasing and natural.

For patients who have been treated with ceramic implants, you conduct regular follow-ups. What are your observations?

We have observed that the restorations remain highly stable over time. The gum's level remains consistent, and we have not encountered any intolerances or cases of peri-implantitis so far.
